Retirement Calculator โ€” Common Questions

A standard rule of thumb is to save 25 times your expected annual retirement expenses (based on a 4% safe withdrawal rate). This means if you spend $50,000 a year, you will need a nest egg of $1.25 million. However, tax structures, pensions, and local inflation can lower or raise this requirement.
Pre-retirement return represents the return on your portfolio during your wealth building years, where you can afford more equity risk (e.g. 7% to 9% real return). Post-retirement return is usually lower (e.g. 4% to 6%) as retirees shift assets into bonds and cash to preserve capital.
Inflation erodes the purchasing power of your money. A portfolio that looks huge today will buy less in 30 years. That is why our calculator automatically adjusts all projections using a real return (expected returns minus inflation) so you can view all numbers in "today's purchasing power".
The 4% withdrawal rate is a popular guideline, but it was designed for a 30-year retirement. If you plan to retire early or want to guarantee that your wealth lasts forever, a lower withdrawal rate (such as 3.25% or 3.5%) is recommended by financial planners.
